What kind of Window Treatments should I use? The Ultimate Window Treatment Guide

What should I put on my windows? Do I need anything on these windows? I need privacy but also don’t want it to be too dark in this room, what should I do? The topic of window treatments comes up a lot for me with clients during consultations as well as when I am working with clients on a renovation project. I’m going to go over some of the more common types of window treatments along with photo examples from some client projects.

Let’s start with Roman Shades - whether you do a pattern or a solid fabric, the shades are functional and beautiful. In the below example, my client wanted the ability to raise and lower the shades and have a liner for blackout purposes. We did raise them all the way on photo shoot day to allow as much natural light as possible to come in on a cloudy day.

Drapes are ideal when you don’t need to open and close them regularly. It’s also a great option when you have space on either side of the window trim to let the drapes extend past the windows. How fun is the ruffle detail on the drapes in my example below?! This was for a tween bedroom transformation.

Woven Woods are one of my favorite window treatments - as you can see in my three example photos from client projects, they come in a variety of different colors/textures and they are easy to raise and lower.

What is your favorite window treatment?

Wyckoff NJ Interior Designer

I loved transforming this living room / dining room space for my clients in Wyckoff. When they purchased their new home, they did not have any furniture purchased for either of these rooms. So it was a total blank slate project for me which is always my favorite!

In the living room, I am so happy with how everything came together - notice how the legs of the coffee table coordinate with the floor lamp base? How fun is that?!

It’s all in the details - I love selecting all of the accessories needed to finish a space.

The mantle is a focal point in the space and I love how the mirror how rounded corners contrast with the trim work.

I am in my happy place whenever I am decorating :)

Did you catch a glimpse of the dining room in the shots of the living room above? It is quite the stunner!

Ridgewood NJ decorator - Living Room Transformation

We recently completed a multi-room project in Ridgewood that included this formal living room. If you look closely, you will notice the home office that I shared last week. For this living room, I recommended a dark blue sofa and I am thrilled that my client said yes! We also painted, replaced the wall sconces and incorporated all new furnishings.

When you face the other direction you get a great view into the family room.

The family room has lots of beautiful windows which provide such pretty light.

We did not touch the lovely stone fireplace and we also kept the existing window treatments but incorporated new furnishings and decor.

I love using the Frame TV which looks like a framed piece of art when you aren’t watching TV.

Bergen County NJ interior designer - Sitting Room Transformation

My clients have this space that is between the family room and the kitchen that was a bit tricky to design. We wanted to make sure that it wasn’t too similar to the family room but they needed to compliment each other since they flow into each other. I am happy that my clients were open to a fun pattern for the chairs and love how the leather and stripes work so well together.

Check out the before photo here!

I am SO happy with how it looks now!

The black coffee table really grounds the space and is a lovely contrast with the light rug.
